What inspired me to start the organization GNC
In 2023 as I was working with rural schools in hard to reach areas I found out there is low enrollment in schools and I was interested to find out why? So I conducted household visits to homes where children were not studying being guided by local leaders.
In Feb, I found this amazing boy named Serruga Lawrence who had dropped out of school for 7 years due what what happened to his physical body .He was born normal like any other child went to school while he was in p.2 second term his legs got paralyzed due injection the mother believe
Lawrence told me that he needed to go to school but he doesn’t have the mobility
ย
I was so touched and it took me months as I think of how best can I help him, later I thought of fundraising money to buy him a wheelchair and it worked out ,I got him a wheelchair chair that fits his challenge. Lawrence was the happiest human being that lived .in 2024 I enrolled Lawrence back to school and he was the best learner in primary 3 with the best hand writing. Lawrence had a dream of becoming a teacher to teacher all children with disabilities
ย
In a due course of his education I discovered that he wasn’t using places of inconvenience because the latrines were not inclusive this caused harm and lead him to drop out of school again because he couldn’t stay in school where he can’t ease himself and this is where the story begins
ย
Lawrence dropped out of school again and it bothered me because I had no money to construct a latrine which will include him plus his classroom has no ramps so carrying him to enter the class room was a risk . So I realized that a wheelchair wasn’t enough for him . Lawrence was neglected once again at home and his mother had no time for him because he would go early in the morning to work for people sot that he gets money for food ,the school too forgot about him . Lawrence got sick and he was never taken to the hospital because they thought this is his life for 7 years now and Lawrence died while at home because he was being neglected and later I received a call that the boy I had enrolled back to school has died
ย
It was a such a sad morning where I saw all my efforts and hope being buried down .it broke my heart .before that I had had a dream to support and work with children like Lawrence because after enrolling him to school I found out that they were actually many other with hearing impairment and physical impairments and I needed to support them with inclusive and quality education and create inclusive education awareness to all communities
ย
However when Lawrence died I thought I am so late like I am delaying to do something because the results of children with disabilities being neglected and excluded in schools and community was becoming worse now that death cases have come up
ย
I didn’t want it to happen to other children that I was taking care of so
ย
I decided to start an initiative to call for inclusive education believing that these children can have quality and inclusive education just like other children and that is how I came up with Great Nations Centre – see beyond
ย
We believe in every child and we see beyond what the eyes just see these children have the potential to study and be great men and women in our country and the world
